On May 3rd 2024, the Malden High School Alumni Association will be inducting into its Hall of Fame the following Alumni.  Please join us at Anthony’s of Malden at 6 p.m. to honor these amazing individuals.

Emery Haskell, Class of 1973

In the field of Military: – Emery was active in the naval reserve while becoming a practicing attorney.  It was his sense of duty to his country that prompted him to seek active duty in the U.S. Navy. He served five combat tours during the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.   For his heroic deeds, he received the Bronze Star. He was an attorney for FEMA before becoming Malden’s Fire Commissioner in 2022.

Jordan Shapiro, Class of 1960

In the field of Business – Jordan an active member of his MHS class both in scholastics and sports, has continued his tireless commitment to both his profession and his community. Jordan, a published and practicing attorney in Malden has received numerous professional awards. His dedication to community includes membership in the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Masons, Odd Fellows, UMA and Temple Tifereth Israel.

Norman Silverman, (Posthumous) Class of 1954

In the field of Community Service – Norman, the philanthropist, was committed to making a difference in the world and to the less fortunate. He achievements are numerous. The Silverman Foundation Institute for Health Care Quality at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is dedicated in his honor for his significant contributions. Norman never forgot his roots and he invested time, treasure and talent for the advancement of Malden Education with his contribution to the      

FAME foundation under Mayor Richard Howard.

Charles Desmond, Class of 1963

In the field of Education – Dr. Desmond has devoted his life to education and to helping society.  He worked for 30 years at UMASS Boston; he was the chair of the Mass Board of Higher Education as well as Executive Vice President of the Trefler Foundation.  Dr. Desmond, a Fulbright Scholar, has been active in numerous organizations: President of AARP Massachusetts and the American Council on Education.  He is a decorated U.S. Army Veteran (Silver & Bronze Stars)

Neal Anderson, Class of 1962

In the field of Government –In 1983, Neal became a member of the Malden City Council and continued his involvement, for almost 30 years.  When he first ran for office, he adopted the slogan, “Together We Can Make A Difference.” He helped to improve the infrastructure of the city, worked to renovate Miller Park, while advocating for the residents in his neighborhood. These actions proved his words were sincere and meaningful. In 2012 he was elected City Council President. Currently, he is Harbormaster for the Malden River.

James Barretto, Class of 1973

In the field of Government – Over 35 years ago, James began his career as a litigator for the Commonwealth of Mass. He served in the appellate division of the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. In 2009, Governor Deval Patrick appointed James to the bench, as a District Court Judge. Later he was appointed to the position of Presiding Chief Justice in the Peabody District Court. Recently, James wrote his first novel, a legal thriller, “Mystic Wind.”

Paul L. Sieswerda, (Posthumous) Class of 1960

In the field of Science – Beginning in the 1960’s Paul, and English major, was passionate about outer space and ocean life.  He became the Curator of fish and mammals at the NE Aquarium in Boston.  In 1985 Paul was honored by MASA for his work related to the Space Shuttle Student Program.  He founded the non-profit Gotham Whale in 2011, a well-known marine mammal organization.  Paul is the author of several children’s books, on ocean life, including “Big Whale, Big City.”

Philip Bynoe, Class of 1979

In the field of Arts/Music:  Philip’s love of music was evident at MHS as a member of the band and orchestra.  Philip went on to study music at Berklee College of Music prior to his professional career. Philip is a three-time Grammy Award nominee and the winner of an Emmy Award. He has performed with several accomplished groups and is in high demand. He shares his passion for music while teaching bass and ensemble work at the L.A .Music Academy, Pasadena CA.

Hall of Fame Recipients 2014-2022


From the start of our Hall of Fame event, the Malden High School Alumni Association has been asking for nominations of MHS graduates to the MHSAA Hall of Fame. It is the purpose of the Hall of Fame to recognize Malden High School alumni for exceptional achievement in their chosen careers or for their outstanding contributions to the Malden Community and beyond.

MHS Alumni are eligible to be nominated to the Hall of Fame ten years “after attending” or graduating. The upcoming inductees will be selected from the following categories:

  • Arts – recognition for outstanding achievement in cultural, visual, or performing arts.
  • Business – recognition for outstanding accomplishments and/or leadership in the business world.
  • Community Service – recognition for special contributions to the Malden community and beyond.
  • Education – recognition for career accomplishments in education, or for contributions to the field of education.
  • Government – recognition for outstanding service to the city, state, or national government.
  • Media – recognition for outstanding achievement in print or broadcast journalism.
  • Military Service– recognition for outstanding service in a branch of the armed services
  • Sciences – recognition for career accomplishments in a scientific or medical-related field.
  • Technology – recognition for career accomplishments in the creation or application of technical processes for practical purposes.

Inductees will be selected from nominations made by alumni and community members and reviewed by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee
